Rev. Robert H. Schuller, who was once one of the most popular TV preachers of all time has been diagnosed with esophageal cancer that has spread to his lymph nodes making his condition serious. He is 87 years old, and his condition was first diagnosed in August. In September, a further evaluation has weighed whether or not chemotherapy or radiation can extend his life or not or whether his condition is terminal.
At some point the elder Schuller had a falling out with his son, Robert A. Schuller when the son’s ministry turned more Christ oriented than the father who wanted the church to be a more general and psychology oriented church that many critics called a prosperity gospel church. At one point, the church took in millions a year before falling into financial problems after the elder Schuller fired the son over their differences and the church fell into financial problems. Eventually, the elder Schuller himself and his family resigned from the church under pressure as the church board looked at the problems as a business disaster and sought to stop the financial bleeding by selling the church to the Catholic Church in Orange. It was a sad decline where a feuding family helped to destroy one of America’s greatest churches and cause it’s financial collapse. Some day some great books will be written about this tragic story of the needless collapse of a great church.
