Trent Reznor is back with a new album, HESITATION MARKS, that he mostly composed on a laptop computer on September 3, that should please many of his fans of his 1994 breakthrough album, THE DOWNWARD SPIRAL, for the same sort of raw industrial music sound as this album. This is the first NIN album in five years since 2008’s THE SLIP, and the new album is described by Reznor has having a “sparce but minimal’ feel to the production sound. Even some classic songs like “Closer” were reproduced by cover acts using simple keyboards or some computer skills. The album has already spurred three singles, “Came Back Haunted”, “Copy Of A” and “Everything”, yet nothing so far seems to have the monster hit commercial appeal of “Closer” which became Reznor’s greatest hit song ever. Johnny Cash did a surprising cover version of “Hurt” before his death as a sort of last hurrah. – But, the new NIN album is surely something to look forward to.
