The Portland Winterhawks fought back from a difficult season to defeat the Edmonton Oil Kings, winning the WHL championship in game six of the series with a 5 to 1 victory. The victorious team defeated the Edmonton team on their home court at Rexall Place. Earlier this year the team was hit with a $200,000 fine, their coach suspended and losing their first round draft picks as punishment for violations of WHL rules that can be very hurtful for the future of the championship team.
Despite these problems, the team remains a favorite of Portland fans. The team returned to a late hero’s welcome tonight, with many fans braving rain to greet the team.
After the NBA Portland Trailblazers fell way short of even making the NBA playoffs this year, the Portland Winterhawks became the new favorites for many in Portland to rally behind. The Portland Timbers soccer team are also having a good season as well.
