Millionaire HUSTLER Magazine publisher, Larry Flynt has endorsed republican Mark Sanford for congress. But, the endorsement is likely more of a publicity gag since Flynt is a democrat and Sanford a republican. Flynt has even asked for photo opts with the disgraced candidate and has offered campaign donations for the maximum $2,600 allowed under federal law. Flynt has openly called Sanford a “liar”, but claims to be offering Sanford support for proving the “hypocrisy of traditional values” among political candidates.
Sanford caused himself great disgrace when he made up a story that he was going hiking along the Appalachian Trail when he instead flew down to Argentina to be with his mistress whom he later married. Sanford isn’t much amused with Flynt’s offer, and has tried his best to throw cold water on the mocking endorsement as the candidate struggles with his opportunity at a political comeback, but instead only finds himself as the butt of numerous political jokes.
Sanford’s opponent is democrat, Elizabeth Colbert-Busch, sister of Stephen Colbert. A conservative group supporting Sanford has been accused of dirty campaign tricks by making misleading and blatantly false “push poll” calls asking voters, “What do you think of Elizabeth Colbert Busch if she had done jail time?” or “What do you think of Elizabeth Colbert Busch is she had had an abortion?”. The national GOP committee that helps candidates running for congress has pulled their support for Sanford, writing off this race as a lost cause and not wanting to tarnish the party reputation over a bad candidate hurtful to the Republican Party’s image.
Normally, this South Carolina seat in congress should be a republican one. But, Sanford’s unexpected primary win put the Republican Party in a tough spot as being stuck with a candidate that they don’t want or need. This gives democrats a rare opportunity to win in this district.
