A Ringling Brothers & Barnum & Bailey Circus elephant was wounded in a drive-by shooting in Jackson, Mississippi. The Asian elephant was hit in the shoulder, and because of the size of the animal and the location of the wound, the gunshot was not fatal to the endangered animal which is expected to make a full recovery following surgery.
The crime will be treated as a serious federal offense and a violation of federal endangered species laws, so the shooter is likely to face serious prison time as well as stiff fines for the crime in addition to gun violations for firing off a firearm in the commission of a crime in a public place.
Elephants are very intelligent animals with an excellent memory and a very large brain, but they have become endangered due to hunters killing the large animals for their ivory tusks.
This was a shocking and unexpected crime. Who ever knew that elephants belonged to rival dueling gangs like the Pachyderms?
