In 2014, NBC will be at another familiar crossroads once again, when Jay Leno’s contract expires after he was forced to take a 50% paycut as well as staff cuts by NBC at his TONIGHT SHOW helm. Will Leno want to sign up for an extension of these cutbacks for another few more years? Will Leno want to move on and enjoy his automobile and motorcycle collection, and Jimmy Fallon finds himself elevated up into the TONIGHT SHOW helm, and NBC takes another big risk like it did with Conan O’Brien? Many question remain to be answered.
Jimmy Fallon has done an excellent job picking up the pieces of the old show left by Conan O’Brien. And Conan O’Brien’s new show over on TBS cable TV looks to be doing just fine as far as a production goes, although the ratings leave a lot to be desired.
More likely than not, Jay Leno agrees to another contract extension, let’s say just two years or so maximum, and all of the pain gets put off for another day by everyone to figure what to do for some future date. But, at some point, if either Jay Leno or David Letterman decide to retire, then likely the other one does as well, and you could see a terrific shakeup of late night TV like hasn’t been seen in years.
There’s likely a little more “Jaywalking” and “Headlines” in our futures. But, just ho much more is a very good question.
