50 SHADES OF GREY Inspires Ivy League BDSM Clubs

The erotic novel, FIFTY SHADES OF GREY, seems to be inspiring a new wave of BDSM oriented student clubs at Ivy League colleges across the county with Harvard expected to become the latest university to sanction and recognize a BDSM oriented student organization. Although BDSM oriented pornography abounds on the Internet, it seemed to have little influence on popular culture, until this novel, FIFTY SHADES OF GREY hit the book shelves in 2011. Reading much like the Victorian era BDSM pornographic literature of around 1980-1910, or even the 1950’s novel, THE STORY OF O, FIFTY SHADES OF GREY has become a sort of sensation with it’s own life, and now is inspiring Ivy League students who want to experiment with this dark form of BDSM oriented sexual play.

Caning, flogging and other S&M demonstrations are common in some meetings of these groups. The NEW YORK OBSERVER ran a photo of a young woman who was caned across her breasts during one such caning demonstration at a Columbia University meeting of the Conversio Virium organization. Now, it appears that Harvard will recognize the new Munch organization, the latest of several new Ivy League BDSM clubs to spring up on these elite college campuses.

BDSM remains a strange and shadowy thing. In the United States, many states will still prosecute sadomasochistic pornography under obscenity laws, where some obscenity offenses involving sadomasochistic abuse could actually garner an enhanced five extra years of imprisonment sentence. Other states might even prosecute private BDSM conduct among adults as well, yet BDSM remains something that many adults have privately experimented with at one time or another, whether it involves a little playful spanking in the bedroom, or more elaborate activity involving handcuffs, canes, whips, riding crops, blindfolds, or other BDSM paraphernalia.

American law doesn’t seem to understand that BDSM is only a form of role-play fantasy for some small segment of adults, not really at all associated with violence such as some form of sexual assault or other violent criminal conduct. In Europe, where much more hardcore BDSM material exists, the movie sets reportedly are a type of party atmosphere where consenting adult actors laugh, joke around, have plenty of food, then shoot a fantasy video cleverly edited to promote a fantasy image of sexual submission. With so much BDSM oriented material available for years, you have to ask yourself just why the FIFTY SHADES OF GREY novel has become such a phenomenon in academic circles. Strangely, it might be that the higher quality of the journalism of the novel has only tended to popularize the dark and more private subject of private BDSM sexuality among adults.

Social conservatives will no doubt find this latest trend on some college campuses disturbing and only a further sign of their claims of social deterioration. NATIONAL REVIEW ON-LINE has already put in their two cents here. However, just as many colleges have Gay student organizations, some of the more active practitioners of BDSM view their own sexuality as another minority subculture rather than just private sexual interest.

But, some social conservatives might also be horrified to learn about how the perverse sexual life of former Reagan Administration financier, Alfred Bloomingdale, in the 1980’s involved a world of BDSM, mistresses, hookers and other bizarreness that might have well reached into some Reagan Administration officials involvement in this world of kinky sex as well. This was potentially one of the biggest White House sex scandals of all time that didn’t fully come into the light of day. The recent Secret Service sex scandal, involving prostitutes was only the latest scandal of sexuality related to the White House.

BDSM isn’t the everyday sexual norm. It’s still a minority and special select group sexual practice. But, it’s a little more common in adult sexual play than some may think. It only seems that FIFTY SHADES OF GREY has only allowed a little more light to shine on this normally more dark subject, and now some college students are at the forefront of this latest sexual minority movement.

So much for the world of reading, writing and riding crops. So might enjoy this lifestyle, while others just find it a pain in the ass.
