MC Hammer Launching the First “Deep Search” Engine

U Can’t Touch This.

And by this, I am referring to the new internet search engine that MC Hammer is designing. Yes, you heard me right – MC Hammer.

The former musician, who goes by Stanley K. Burrell now, has high aspirations that his search engine, WireDoo, will surpass the current favorites, Google and Bing.

Shocking as it may seem, MC Hammer (I refuse to call him Mr. Burrell) has been part of the tech industry for quite a while. In fact, he shared his knowledge about it with Harvard Business School in 2009. At the time, Hammer had developed, a site to promote dance videos, as well as his iPhone app, BurrellTime. The app allowed users to follows his schedule in real time.

Clever, Hammer – you basically created a Twitter app where people can only follow you. I can’t imagine how many followers he had (or has, if this thing still exists somewhere).

WireDoo targets users a bit differently than its competitors, and Hammer refers to it as a “deep search” engine. By typing in a keyword or phrase once, it will automatically detect and pull up related topics. For example, typing in a zip code would return general information on the city in addition to a section for related content. The related information section would contain links connecting to schools, hospitals, and real estate within that zip code. The feature enables web users to access many layers of a topic. Hammer says that the engine is his “pet project” that he’s been working on for a couple of years.

Hammer addressed the public’s concern over the questionable need for another search engine at the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco. He explained that products can always be improved and upgraded. Citing changes to existing technology like Google and the various versions of the iPhone, Hammer believes WireDoo will cater to a gap that exists in the search engine market.

WireDoo is still in pre-beta, with a team of developers working to complete it. You can actually sign up to be among the first to test the new search engine at

With a creator that launched something as epic as Hammer Pants, I’d say it’s worth checking out.  Although the beta release is not ready just yet, it is anticipated to be complete December of this year.
