It hasn’t been long since TMZ posted a shocking photo of an emaciated Steve Jobs. Now we are learning the sad news that the 56-year-old Apple co-founder has died after a years long struggle with pancreatic cancer.
Jobs was initially diagnosed with a rare form of pancreatic cancer in 2004. He had a islet cell neuroendocrine tumor which is not considered as aggressive as other forms of pancreatic cancer. He had the tumor successfully removed, however, he continued to become increasingly thin and frail.
Since that time there have been on-going rumors that he was still fighting cancer and continued denials that he was sick. Over the years he has attributed his health issues to various causes including a ‘hormone imbalance’ and has otherwise refused to comment on speculation about his health.
He had a successful liver transplant in 2009, but by January 2011 he had taken a leave of absence from Apple stating he needed to focus on his health. He ultimately resigned as CEO of Apple in August 2011.
Steve Jobs’ family made a statement today that he had ‘died peacefully today surrounded by his family’. Apple released the following statement:
“We are deeply saddened to announce that Steve Jobs passed away today. Steve’s brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives.
The world is immeasurably better because of Steve. His greatest love was for his wife, Laurene, and his family. Our hearts go out to them and to all who were touched by his extraordinary gifts.
Tributes to Steve Jobs are already coming in from his long list of notable friends.
Steve Jobs leaves behind his wife Laurene Powell Jobs who he married in 1991. Our sympathies go out to his wife and family on the death of Steve Jobs.
