Rocker Bret Michaels is suing the Tony Awards after being hit in head with a piece of scenery while performing on the show.
Lets go back to the 2009 Tony Awards, which are arguably the most memborable in recent years, but not for ways the Tonys would want. They enlisted rocker and reality star Bret Michaels to perform for them during the opening (check out the video clip below). While on stage, he was hit with a piece of scenery, and had to be treated for a broken nose and cut lip immediately after the show. Fast forward six months to 2010 – Bret suffered from a nearly life-threatening subarachnoid brain hemorrhage and spent the year going in and out of the hospital. Now, TMZ is reporting that Bret has filed a lawsuit against the Tony Award Productions, CBS and others, claiming producers of the show never instructed him on how to properly and safely exit the stage following his performance, which caused him to get hit in the head by part of the set.
Some of the details from TMZ:
In his suit, Michaels claims, “One of the most common causes of this type of hemorrhage is head trauma — exactly like the one Michaels suffered at the hands of the Tony Awards.””Through his sheer will to live, to see his children grow up, [he] was able to survive this trauma.”
Bret says producers have “failed and refused” to remedy the situation … and even blamed him for the mishap at the Tony Awards, claiming he “missed his mark.”
Michaels is suing for unspecified damages. A rep for the Tonys had no comment.
I feel like I remember something being said when Bret was first dealing with the brain hemorrhage that it was not the result of what had happened at the Tonys. Does anyone else remember that? I dunno… maybe I’m making that up. I’m inclined to think that this was a terrible accident, regardless of if it had to do with the hemorrhage or not. Bret is a pretty seasoned performer, and the producers of the Tonys are trained professionals. I can’t imagine that the Tony people wouldn’t tell him about a huge giant sign that was going to lower from the ceiling. I also can’t imagine that, given Bret’s extensive live performance experience, the Tony people would think that the instructions they provided weren’t adequate. While I feel for Bret with all the medical drama he went through last year, I think this suit is a tad ridiculous. But that’s just me.
