DoD Blocks YouTube, ESPN, eBay To Clear Way For Japan Relief

U.S. military users expecting to get access to access to a host of news and social media sites (YouTube, ESPN, eBay, Amazon, and others) were in for a major shock this morning, when sites they previously had access to were listed as blocked.  A federal news site reports that the ominous warning is not the real reason for the blockage – it’s bandwidth concerns for U.S. military operations in support of relief efforts in Japan after last week’s devistating earthquake and tsunami.

Damage to trans-Pacific data lines is said to be behind the restrictions.  No word from DoD as to when the restrictions will be lifted.
