Will Dancing With the Stars feature same-sex dancers next season? Israel Dancing with the Stars has same-sex competitors, why not the American DWTS? Portia de Rossi is said to have been approached to participate in the show with a same-sex partner. See a video of the Israel DWTS version below.
Speculation has been running rampant as to whether or not Dancing With The Stars will try to top last seasons record breaking ratings by scheduling a same sex couple for an upcoming season of the show. Apparently there have been several people approached about doing this, including Ellen DeGeneres’s wife Portia de Rossi.
Ellen has confirmed that her wife was approached about doing DWTS, but not whether or not they asked her to dance with a male or female professional dancer. Ellen also said she didn’t think that Portia would do the show.
The hub-bub about doing a same-sex couple on Dancing With the Stars started after the Israeli version of the show did it. Gili Shem Tov, an Israeli television presenter who has a female partner requested a female dance partner. She was partnered with professional dancer Dorit Milman, who is heterosexual. You can see a video of them doing the quick step below.
Of course, people are debating whether or not America is ready for something like that on their television sets. And, of course, there are people on both sides of it. DWTS judge Carrie Ann Inaba is behind it and says America is definitely ready for a same-sex couple on Dancing With the Stars.
Some people are saying that since openly lesbian Margaret Cho didn’t do well in last season’s DWTS that people aren’t ready to see a lesbian dancing with another woman on the show. I say that’s not so. There is a world of difference between Margaret Cho and Portia di Rossi. I would venture to say that the only thing they have in common is their lesbianism. I personally would not use Margaret Cho as a gauge as to whether or not people wanted to see a lesbian on DWTS.
So the question is will Dancing With the Stars feature a same-sex couple to try to make a political statement and/or normalize same-sex relationships or will DWTS cast a same-sex couple just for ratings. This is a television show, of course its about ratings! If its all about trying to top last season’s ratings bonanza because of Bristol Palin’s appearance on the show they are probably missing the boat. The gay community already watches the show, so it would probably not bring a lot of extra viewers past the first couple of shows. Unless it IS Portia di Rossi dancing. Anyone that beautiful is likely to bring viewers regardless of who she dances with.
