Paul Newman undergoes life-saving surgery

Legendary actor Paul Newman has undergone surgery to save his life - after being diagnosed with cancer.

The screen star reportedly entered a New York hospital for the secret operation. Everything went well but Newman, 83, is showing no signs of slowing down and remains very involved in his passion for car racing.

He is fit enough to go out and has been seen outside his home in Westport, Connecticut, where his neighbours say he looks well. An insider close to the star said that he recently checked into a New York hospital for serious surgery "related to cancer" which left him convalescing for three weeks.

"He initially was having trouble breathing and a hard time walking. After Thanksgiving, his family became concerned and took him to see a New York specialist."

"He was admitted right away into the hospital where he underwent surgery. He's bounced back now but he's not a well man and people in his company are trying to keep this very quiet." He added.

Michelle Galerkin:

I'm devastated. He will be 83 in two more days. I just saw him race at Lime Rock at the end of the summer and he won the race over all his competitors...and at his age he's sharp as ever. The man is incredible for many reasons and my thoughts are strong that he will recover fully and enjoy his blessed life once more.

Prayers going up for Mr. Newman. He is a class act.

Sources? Daily Mail and Alertnet?

Whatever, I'll believe it when something that doesn't smell like last weeks jogging socks reports it.

In the meantime his publicist quotes Newman as saying: "I'm being treated for athlete's foot and hair loss. Maybe they know something I don't know."

Regardless, with the Daytona 24 hours this weekend we should know the truth soon enough, Newman would never miss being there.
