The radio host, who returns to the airwaves today after his seven-month radiation shower, vows that you'll never hear another racist remark pass his lips. Admitting that his ouster by CBS was "probably what should have happened," the I-man tells Barbara Walters that he won't breach the trust of the women he once called "nappy-headed ho's."
"They were hurt," says Imus, recalling his hours-long sitdown with the Rutgers women's basketball team.
"I told them about who I was and what my life was about, but I could see that I wasn't getting through. ... One of the kids said, 'It's heartbreaking.' ... They told me how they felt, and I got the message. They accepted my apology and they forgave me. And I [will] never - nor will anybody else on my program ever - do anything that will make them regret ... that they forgave me." Asked if he'll be more cautious now, Imus says he still thinks Vice President Cheney is "a war criminal, and Hillary Clinton is still Satan. I haven't changed."
"Are we going to have a kinder, gentler Don Imus?" Walters asks.
"I don't think so, no," he says. "We're just going to have somebody who's just not a moron, who's not going to say untrue, unfunny things about innocent people."
