DreamWorks and Paramount have decided to go wide with director Tim Burton's bigscreen adaptation of Stephen Sondheim's Broadway musical "Sweeney Todd" on Dec. 21, versus a platform release.
Robert Downey Jr will join Jamie Foxx for "The Soloist", a drama about a violin prodigy, says Variety. Downey will play Steve Lopez, the Los Angeles Times columnist who discovered Nathaniel Ayers, a downtown L.A. homeless man who was a skillful violinist. After learning that Ayers was a prodigy until schizophrenia made it impossible to continue, Lopez wrote columns about the musician and developed a relationship that changed both their lives.
Fox has recruited Keanu Reeves to headline a remake of "The Day the Earth Stood Still," its re-imagining of the 1951 Robert Wise-directed sci-fi classic, says Variety. Reeves will play Klaatu, a humanoid alien who arrives on Earth accompanied by an indestructible, heavily armed robot and a warning to world leaders that their continued aggression will lead to annihilation by species watching from afar.
Intrepid Pictures has acquired supernatural thriller The Fourth Horseman which centers on a young priest's battle to thwart the rise of the fourth horseman of the apocalypse, when three of the horsemen -- War, Pestilence and Famine -- await the birth of their fourth brother so they can fulfill their destiny and bring about the end of times.
Oliver Stone is in final negotiations with United Artists to direct "Pinkville," a Vietnam War drama based on a true story set to star Bruce Willis and Channing Tatum. Michael Pena is in talks to play the third lead role. Willis will play William R. Peers, the real-life Army general who investigated the infamous 1968 My Lai Massacre of Vietnamese civilians. About 350-500 people -- mostly women, children and the elderly -- were killed by U.S. soldiers.
