American Idol Roundup - Save Katherine McPhee!

So the final four edition of American Idol is in the books, jack. It was all Elvis, all the time, but in some cases it was the fat-bloated Elvis, not the young hunky Elvis.

Chris Daughtry and Elliot Yamin appeared to have convinced the judges that the deserve to stay another week; though America will have the final work on that. While Yamin has the personality of a piece of lumber and Daughtry has been riding the one-trick "rocker" pony since day one, their performances were worthy of escaping the bottom spot this week.

Assuming their tickets are punched (and that's assuming a lot), that leaves Taylor Hicks and Katherine McPhee to fight it out for the final spot. Neither one truly excelled Tuesday.

So it comes down to a grey-haired, bar-singing, Joe Cocker imitator vs. a sultry, velvet voiced young vixen. As much as I'd like to believe that's a no brainer, the fact that Hicks is still in the competition tells me that it's absolutely not...

Save Katharine!

Update: With Katharine in the final two it's time to shut down this comment thread. Head on over to the Katharine McPhee final two thread.

KATHERINE SUCKS!

I don't know why she is even in the top 4 at this point. Okay, she's hot, I know, but she doesn't have talent!

I like Taylor and Chris a hundred times more than Katherine. I will be SOOOOOO happy if Katherine get's booted tonight. I might even thow a party...

wow, to say that she has no talent, does not make me want to hear you sing - ever! Katharine has undeniable talent my dear. they all do, but i HAd to stop when you would say THAT...are you jealous or something...i mean, why even refer to the fact that she's hot? what does that have to do with talent. You got envy on your mind.

Hot!? Gorgeous?! I actually think she's kinda goofy, although in a cute kinda way. Loveable - yes, but "hot"? Nah! O.K. shes built well in certain places, but to say she's "gorgeous" is like saying Barbara Streisand is gorgeous (although Kat is a bit better looking than Steisand ever was). One thing she definitely has in common with Streisand however: HER TALENT!!! No doubts about that. In fact, I can't think of one female singer's voice ever recorded that I would say I like better than Kats. You know, I don't even care if she wins this AI thing. I just want her to cut some records. Just keep one thing in mind : THE BEST DOESN'T ALWAYS WIN no matter what the endevor(and especially in shows like American Idol).

P.S - this message written by a heterosexual male.

Kat is awful...very awful. Please do not ask me if I sit under a rock all day, because actually I sit in auditions all day, listening to people sing and watching them act (and sometimes watching them..do whatever it is you call "that"). Katherine is "that." I never had a problem with it, because this is a competition and she is definitely at competion level. The problem is that chris (and another I can think of) were not anywhere near "competition" level. They stood so far ahead of the rest it was absurd. So the question bothering everyone is how are the most talented and professional singers getting voted off? My guess is because of the same genius that brought us G.W. but hey, that's just me. Kat's fine as long as she just stands there, its really the moving, singing and talking that messes her up. Chris...that boy has a bright future ahead of him while others are free to be the "underwood" of 2006. just my 2.

Katherine Mcphee should have been booted two weeks ago. Paris had way more talent. The fact is that Chris Daughtry was the only contestant that even had a chance at hitting it big after american idol. We might see one album by the other three and then they'll disappear. It's a fact.

dave:

First of all, comparing McPhee with Daughtry is like comparing apples and oranges. Chris rocks and Kat....well, she sings. So. It's hard to say who is "better". That really depends on your musical tastes. I will say this however - the style of music Kat aspires to perform takes a lot more talent, and a much more developed skill level to perform well. It's kind of like what my Sax teacher once told me years ago when I told him a was thinking of picking up the guitar - the saxaphone is a easier instrument to play.....Badly! I think that's what's happening with a few of Kats performances. Kat's problem is she is a bit "erratic", but that probably comes from her nervousness. But to call her "awful" or much less talented then the rest to me just sounds downright ignorant. In any case, if you were to take the top ten performances of the top twelve contestants this year, I think three of them would belong to Kat, at least (I still think her rendition of "until you come back to me" was technically by far the number one top performance). The problem is, a few of the worst would probably belong to her as well. O.K., so Chris was more consistent. But with the style of music he performed, consistency is a lot easier.

Z-man:

KATHERINE McPHEE SHOULD WIN AI (or at least be in the finale)!!
I think people are being unfair to Kat, she is a "talented" singer. Kat should be in the top 2 along with Taylor; however, because of the Chris controvesey she will be eliminated Wed. (Most of his fans are angry that Chris left instead of Kat; therfore, Chris fan are going to vote for Elliot and Taylor in despite of Kat.)
KAT is the best adn she deserves to be in the final, so PLEASE VOTE FOR KATHERINE McPHEE!!

dave:

After last night's performance, I changed my mind. "Until you come back to me" is no longer the best AI performance of the year. "Somewhere over the rainbow" just blew it far way!! Come On! After that performance, how can anybody say that Kat is "very awful" or "untalented"? Years from now, when they roll out "The Best of American Idol" DVD, you can bet that that performance will be on it! As of now, after five years of some pretty good performances, I think it stands as the performance to beat (arguably of course).

If I was a music producer, out of all the contestants I've seen on the show this year, my choice of somebody to groom would be Kat. The choice is just too damn simple (and they all need grooming no matter who ends up on a record label). And I say that as somebody that has studied music for most of his life. O.K, I'm no music industry executive that knows who's bound to market well in the industry, but I do have a damn good handle on music as an art form (as opposed to music as a "commodity" - there is a big difference I'm sure). From that point of view, NOBODY can touch Kat. She is that good.

dave:

Here's a long one. Please read on.

Laura, don't feel bad. I kinda agree with you. Even though it looks as though Taylor is going to win (his following seems too big to beat), he really shouldn't. AI is supposed to be a contest of musical talent, and that talent definitely belongs to Kat. I think Taylor should get into politics. I think that's where his true talent lies. Either that, or get in to some kind of sales gig.

Even though I rather not say it, I'm a bit inclined to agree with Jen too about Kat's attitude. She doesn't appear to take to criticism very well, and I can see how she would be misconstrues as a bit pretentious. Like when she started doing that duet with Andrea Bocelli in her coaching session with David Foster. I can see how somebody might see that as a bit too "show-offy". But criticism IS something she's going to have to get used to if she's going to develop her talent to the fullest. Even if she is way beyond the others, she's not anyway near her peak and she needs to realize that if she doesn't already. And that holds true even if her peak is equal to that of the legendary performers who's songs she choose to perform on the show (and I believe it is or maybe even beyond). She's just not there yet. I think that's why the judges are so hard on her. But hey!! She is only 21 years old and she does have a monster talent. With those two attributes, humility doesn't come easy. At this stage in her career, I'd be surprised if she really does have more humility than that!! That's something that will come to her, and to that end, the criticism will help her out, no matter how badly she takes it now.

In her defense about the judges criticisms, you have to admit that the judges were pretty harsh on her considering the magnitude of her performances. Even Simon once admitted to that, and he doesn't seem like the type of guy to admit when he's wrong. I think, however, her reaction to the criticisms is one more of bewilderment, and not so much one of an angry cry-baby. It's more like, "What are you trying to say", not "Screw you". And that just brings me to my biggest criticism with the judges in general. THEIR criticism isn't very constructive if you can even understand it. They're just way too subjective! Like when Paula appeared to be talking out her back-side about Kat's "I have nothing" performance. What the heck was she talking about!? Who knows. I doubt Paula does. Of course, the judges just can't come out a say, "We think your cocky Kat, so we're bound to shoot you down no matter how well you do". Maybe Kat will figure that out latter if that's the case. Whatever. The show is suppose about talent. Character judgments should be left out no matter how hard that is to do. Unfortunately, it appears as though Taylor is going to win on his apparent character (or I should say "image". Who knows who he really is), not his talent. "Ooo, thank you for letting me sing your song Boss Springstein - I'm not worthy!!!. That's diplomacy, not talent. Run for governor or something. You can have Bill Clinton do some crappy saxaphone licks while you sing during your campaign.

That person (as a singer) has peeped through occasionally in Kat's AI performances, and that person, although still an infant, is better than Agulara.

so, i'm really a little bothered by everyone saying how great Kat is, cus she's really not!! American Idol should not be someone who sings through their nose and makes me cringe everytime they hit a longer, higher note! I'm a singer myself (in the shower and at my church) ;), and I'll tell the truth I could never get up and sing in front of that many people in a million years, so mad props to her for being able to do that!! She seems very full of herself though, and that bothers me so much! She does have a beautiful voice but she lets it get away from her, like she just doesn't think she has to try very hard to make her voice work, but she really does! I've never heard an idol contestant mess up so many songs either! She's beautiful, can have a beautiful voice when she works with it, but I thought the American Idol should be someone with heart, undeniable (record AND stage) talent, meaning they can get up, sing a song effortlessly, and without messing up and butchering numerous song week after week!! Chris and Elliot should have been the ones battling it out for the top 2! (love you, Taylor, but Chris and Elliot have my heart) :P Chris being an amazing performer, singer (even my mom, my grandma and stepmom loved him so don't give me that not everyone likes rockers BS), he was an amazing father to his kids, and he just seemed to have so much heart in it, no arrogance at all! And Elliot, awesome voice, needs a lil work on stage presence but I would see him workin on it and getting it one day, and talk about someone with heart, loves his mom and family more then anything, and he's hard of hearing in one ear, dear lord, if you can sing like that, and not fully hear yourself, that's talent! (imagine what he could do with full hearing) I don't care if Kat wins, I don't see myself buying a record or going to see a concert... I'm just not a fan!! You better believe you'll see me at any Chris or Elliot concert though!! :)(I wouldn't mind seein Taylor either!! That dancin is crazy, but so entertaining!!) Kelly, Bo, Clay, Carrie... great top 2's throughout American Idol history, i'm a little curious what's goin on this season?!

American Idol isn't really ... (Below threshold)
NetSlob:

American Idol isn't really a singing competition; it's a PERFORMING competition. A PERFORMANCE includes stage presence, charisma, appearance, and the ability to entertain as well as sing.

Kat may be a talented singer, but Taylor is by far the better ENTERTAINER.

Taylor wins, hands down.

Yo NetSlob (love that name)... (Below threshold)
dave again:

Yo NetSlob (love that name). American Idol IS just a singing contest. The show is looking more to promote the careers of "recording artists", not so much the careers of "performing artists." It's about scoring a gig with a "record" company. Besides, the show really is not formatted to show off whatever else talent the contestant might have except maybe dancing, and Taylor isn't exactly Micheal Jackson. In fact, I like Taylor better when he's not hopping around the stage like a kangaroo or falling on his back or kicking around the microphone stand like a drunken idiot. In my book, that isn't exactly something that can even be described as the "performing arts". It's not even entertaining. It's pretty peculiar behavior though! It seems to be more a device he uses to divert the audiences attention away from his crappy singing - exactly what John Beluchi and Dan Akroyd used to do in "the Blues Brothers" (not exactly an act that toped the billboard charts). Also, having your shirt untucked isn't exactly what I call good "stage presence". Come on! How can you say that looks better than Kat up on stage! Are you alright? That's just another thing that makes him look drunk. If he wants to do the drunk guy routine, AND sing good at the same time, I think he needs to study some Dean Martin films or something.

You know, it seems that by your criteria, every weekend musician playing at all the Holiday Inns across the country qualifies as an American Idol. Did you see the Blues Brothers movie? Remember the keyboard player (can 't remember his name) that had the regular night club gig before the brothers put "the band" back together. That's Taylor!! I guess that's entertainment when you have nothing else to do on a Saturday night, but not exactly something you want to put on CD.

NetSlob:

Dave, your arguments are unconvincing, but I appreciate your ability to express them.

It's patently obvious that American Idol is a performance contest. Viewers are forming their opinions of contestants based upon the entire package - appearance, charisma, attitude, singing, etc. It's about entertainment . . . The same characteristics, by the way, that sell records and concert tickets.

If it was soley about singing ability, they might as well place the contestants in dark rooms and conduct 'blind singing tests.' Not gonna happen. I'd much rather see Kat wearing one of those skimpy outfits.

And when it comes to PERFORMANCE. . . I'd have a better time attending one of Taylor's concerts. I'll buy his records, too.

You may not enjoy Taylor's performances. Vive le difference! Millions do. :)

dave Part 1.2:

Netslob:

Good argument!! Thank you.

All those other characteristics you mention besides singing ability ARE important to the success of a musical artist - absolutely. To some degree, a "recording artist" must also be a "performing artist". The main points I was trying to make however, (before I digressed into my blues brothers spiel), is two fold: First of all, singing ability is suppose to be by far the most important attribute of the AI contestants. Who cares if you can crack a good joke or swing a microphone like Roger Daltry if you can't sing for beans. Right? Second of all, the show really is not formatted to exhibit to any appreciable extent the general abilities of the contestants as "performers" no matter how you define the word. That is of course, with the exception of singing, and to a lesser extent, dancing. If the producers intended the show to be more than that, than I'll I can say is they fall way too short of their intentions. "Stage presence" is exhibited to a considerable degree, but you really can't say any one contestant this year was any better or worst than the rest in that regard alone. The differences were so relatively trivial. As long as you can smile when you should, use proper eye direction, show enough confidence, and not show up with mustard stains on your shirt (or dress), you'll be fine (everything is pretty much acceptable these days, including holes in your jeans. It's just regarded as a particular "style"). I can't see where the "charisma" factor comes in on the show at all, other than in the short interviews you saw of the contestants. But even then, I can't see how any one excelled over any of the others in that respect, including Taylor.
"charismatic" is not a word I would use to describe his performances. "Spastic" - yes, "charismatic" - no. So to sum it up, I'll say that I didn't see the contestants "perform" enough to judge any of them on their various qualities as "performers", EXCEPT FOR SINGING (and I did see all the performances). I'll say that with the exception of Taylor who showed enough of his dancing abilities to be judged on it. My judgment - it sucks!

Besides, general showmanship isn't just about how many various talents/qualities a person has and how good each of them are in and by themselves. It's also about how well you use them all TOGETHER. For example, both Micheal Jackson and Gene Kelly could both sing and dance brilliantly. But Gene Kelly excelled by far in the way he could do them harmoniously together. When Taylor performs, I see two Taylors up there on stage. One is singing while the other does his spastic dancing routine, and way too often, the dancer over shadows the more important performer - the singer. So even if he could do both very well (and he can't), he tends to ruin the quality of one by doing the other. I will praise him on the way he participates in the audience, but in a concert setting, that's something he won't be able to do much. I will also praise him on his apparent attitude (one again, the key word here is "apparent"). It is awesome!!! I know that if he were reading this criticism of him right now, he'd be laughing about it. Right? Or would he!? Maybe he would pick up his computer monitor and toss it out the window! Who knows for sure except for himself and the people that know him personally. He just might be a moody guy. We're all human. Right? In any case, his reaction to this would not in anyway justify weather or not he is to receive my vote. What does justify weather or not he is to receive my vote is the thing I do know about him for sure - HE IS NOT THE BETTER SINGER. And as I just explained, I can't say for sure he is even the better "performer" even if there was a more objective definition of what that word really means and Taylor exemplified it.

I have more to say about this but I gotta go for now. See "Dave Part II" coming up, if you will.

Dave,
My only question is: Who are you trying to convince you are a heterosexual male, us or yourself. Given your comments about Kat, the Barbara Streisand comparison. You are not a heterosexual but only attempting to play one in real life. Come out already man and get on with your life. For the record, America got lazy and the American Idol went home 5/10. Kat is the only one remaining even remotely resembling an American Idol. The sad thing is that Taylor will win this year, he has to. Look at the past winners, notice what is missing?

dave in defense:

Yeah!! Gotta love Tim!! Ya know, this is kinda like fishing. I cast out my line and wait for the fish to bite. Tim is a tiny bite, but hey! It's a bite.

First of all Tim, we are in agreement on one thing - our choice of the American idol champion (for the most part). And Yeah, I know, it's probably time for a guy to win the contest according to a lot of people. So if your insult was a reaction to any disagreement about that, I suggest you read my comments again. You misinterpret me. I wouldn't say that Chris was better than Kat though, or visa versa, although I would probably vote for Kat in the end assuming Chris didn't impress the hell out of me the way Kat did this week. I would be totally content just to see the two of them in the finale. Wouldn't be writing any of this stuff here and now if that happened.

Second of all, I'd like to say that you are to Sigmund Freud as Taylor Hicks is to Joe Cocker - just a lame imitation. How can you assume to pass psychological judgment on me or my sexual orientation based on anything I wrote on this site? Are you some half-ass shrink trying to find work or something? I don't know, maybe you're a homo just trying to "recruit" me into your world. My guess is your like Simon Cowell - you get off by being an a-hole. Whatever the case, your comment to anybody that knows me, would qualify as the most asinine one posted on this site so far (and there are some doozies here). Before writing such crap, you need to first understand my intention for proclaiming my sexual orientation in the first comment I wrote above. If your interested, let me know. I'll explain it to you. Don't feel like it right now though. That's not the subject matter here.

I would just like to comment that Katherine McPhee in my opinion has a greater dimension in her talent than any American Idol contestant that I recall with the exception of Kelly Clarkson.

She has a deep well of talent and I wish her well.

Her rendition of "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" was stunning. Her vocal range, yes her beauty and charisma are all components of a very talented individual who has great promise.

I believe she deserves to win based upon what I have described above -- I don't want to say anything negative about Taylor, but I would have no interest in his music. Without his gyrations which he seems to enjoy there is nothing deeper regards a great musical talent.

Jen, we're suppose to be voting on musical talent, not respectability. If we were voting on respectability, Elliot would get my vote too - easily.

Carole, Thank you for getting right to the point. That pretty much says it all. I don't know if Clarkson is better though, as I never saw her perform. Only time will tell I guess.

I'd like to add that the "dimensions" and "components" Carole speaks of gets exhibited mainly THROUGH KAT'S VOICE. She doesn't need any Taylor like "gyrations" to make her shine. Actually, the same can be said for Taylor too, although he definitely doesn't shine as bright.

I am surprised mostly by the "personal" attacks from J -- I posted my opinion and have little regard for persons who dispute the right for a different point of view.

This is disappointing an a reflection of a most insecure person.

But this is not what my opinion was about -- I simply wanted to comment on this site that I believe that based upon what I have watched that Katherine has an amazing gift and I wish her well.

I would like to see her win this event -- if she dosen't she will still go on to achieve her dreams because of her amazing voice.

Dave:

Jen,

I suppose you think Nancy Kerrigan got what she had coming to her. Right? You do know the story about Nancy and Tonya Harding, don't you? For some reason, that's what I think of when I read your comments.

To recognize talent for what it really is, you first need to rise above your own personal prejudices. I don't think your capable of doing that yet so do me a favor - don't vote! Who cares if Katherine comes off as little miss mommy's girl??!! That's not what this competition is about!! Besides, who are you to judge her character anyway? Do you actually know her personally? Ya know, people are very complex beings, and TV doesn't tend to show them for who they really are in their entirety. The term "Reality TV" is just an oxymoron. Remember that!

Now, let me explain a few things to you about "pitch problems" (I know this as a professional musician). First of all, EVERY contestant on the show has exhibited them, INCLUDING ELLIOT, and you would probably have to listen to each and every performance by all the contestants a good number of times to determine who had the most. Don't forget, these are live performances, the contestants are not wearing headphones, and we're not listening to seasoned professionals. They're all still amateurs (and even professionals hit bad notes from time to time). Just this morning, I was watching footage of a Kelly Clarkson AI performance. Damn! Talk about "pitchy"!!! In Elliot's case, the judges just did not choose to criticize him about it when he went off key. They probably don't always hear the bad notes, or just overlooked them. Second of all, the more "vocally challenging" a performance is, the more likely a performer is to hit a bad note. Kat's performances in general were quite more challenging than the others'. Sometimes she bites off more than she can chew, but she still manages to chew it up better than the others probably could, and even if she couldn't, I give here credit for taking the risk. Third of all, the ONLY time I heard a judge criticize her pitch was right after her "I Have Nothing" performance (You said they ALWAYS do). Paula mentioned something about bad notes. But you know what? The performance really wasn't that bad in that regard. I've since listened to it again to see if I could validate Paula's criticism. If I were to choose a performance to show Kat how/when/why she goes off key, that performance definitely would not be my first choice. That's it for now.

Dave - the only one on this site

P.S. Jen, you should try to use better punctuation when you write your comments. Otherwise, you come off as somebody that's just ranting and raving about nothing substantial.

Wow! Talk about hitting a sour note!! Jen, as far as I'm concerned, you may write all you want here. Unlike what you just said to me in your previous comment, I never said that you may not. I didn't even imply that I think I have a right to say weather or not you may. But at the same time, however, don't expect your comments and opinions to be exempt from any criticism or disagreement. As you can see, mine have been, and I have taken some personal attacks. Sorry if I offended you.

To answer your question: Yes, I do know Katherine McPhee (as you can see, you assume too much). I met her when I was in music school in Boston. Unfortunately though, I never had the pleasure of getting to stick my nose up her ass. Ahhh!! Just kidding! Thought I'd try to lighten up the tension here. Actually, I never met her. But that just brings me to the point I was trying to make. Do you know her? Hmmm...Maybe I assumed too much as well! I answered your question, now you can answer mine. Do you know her?

Jen, thanx for the response.

Now, even though you very well might be a good judge of character, the possibility still remains that your derogatory opinions about Kat could be quite far off base. Why? Simply because YOU DON'T KNOW HER. So your not being fair to her. That is one point I was trying to make. But that's beside the main point. The main point is that even if you do know her, and she does have all those ugly personality quirks you say she has, (I know that others agree with you), the fact still remains that she can "sing her butt off" to use Paula Abdul's words. To deny her credit for that just because you don't like her is also unfair. Now, you might sincerely have yourself convinced that she sucks as a singer and are not talking trash about her on this site just to dys her. If that's the case, then you'll have to look very closely at yourself and ask the question, "Do I think she sucks because I hate her, or do I really think she can sing?" See what I'm getting at? Consider it an exercise in "objectivity". It seems a lot of people commenting on this site could use such exercise. Sorry for sounding pompous....................Dave

dave:

Opp. Almost forgot. In regards to our discussion about maintaining proper pitch when singing, I would say Chris Daughtry had the least problems. In fact, I can't think of one instance where he hit a sour note. That's Chris' biggest asset in all aspects of his performances - total consistency. He is a singing machine. This site isn't about him though.

Taylor is a great singer, he is sultry and fun. His sound is unusual, much like the great Joe Cocker. Kat is really talented also, although she is more of a Celine or Barbara type (BORING).The problem with Kat is that she isn't really likeable. When her audition aired I was certain that she was going to win. Now I am praying she doesn't. She keeps singing these really boring songs and acts like a baby when the judges aren't flattering. Her personality is a turn off. Yes she can sing but so can Taylor, Elliot, Chris and Paris. The biggest difference between Kat and the others is her crappy attitude. There is no doubt that she is talented but talent isnt everything-fans have to want to buy your cds.

Amanda, thanks for the support!! Much appreciated, and I'm glad you enjoy it.

Ya know, as much as I wish Kat all the best in her career going forward (don't care much how Taylor's turns out), after reading some of the comments on this and other sites, I think it would be best for her if she looses tonight. For some really peculiar reason, she attracts too much "negative sentiment" to put it lightly. For her to win could easily stir up more. I can just image her getting physically assaulted by some wacked out envious female that goes through life bitter because her Daddy failed to show up at her dance recital when she was a little girl.

dave:

AT LAST, I see a good, comprehensive criticism on this site!! Great job Beth!! And I say that as a McPhee fan. If Kat is going to loose to Taylor (and I think she probably will), it will probably be not so much because of her attitude, but more because of the songs she chooses to perform. To me too it tends to be a bit boring. The nicest thing about Kat though is how she can make something beautiful out of something that would otherwise be boring, which is quite cool.

I can't say that the likes of Celine Dione and Barbara Streisand sell less records than the likes of Joe Cocker though. I'd have to do some research to make a claim like that. I would bet Streisand did better than Cocker to date anyway (actually, I would think Celine did too - could be wrong).

The important thing to people like me is this however: Even though I like the style of music Taylor performs better than the style Kat performs, I still appreciate both styles, and I would say Kat still did a better job with hers than Taylor did with his, especially after considering how much more difficult Kat's is to perform well. She therefore deserves to win. Also, the quality of her voice is way beyond that of the other contestants you mentioned, especially Taylor. To me, the attitude thing is just so damn insignificant, and maybe even a bit understandable. I think I'll address it one more time in another comment if I get around to it.
