With people like you, the world of music becomes full of false rumours and gets a bad image. I usually try to respect the comments of everyone, but in this case, I must say you don't deserve respect or anything similar.

I, for one, feel bad about the snarkiness a picture like this can generate for Mr. Van Halen. This man provided me with hours of entertainment and delight growing up. For that, I owe him quite a bit more gratitude than to make a judgemental comment about him in reference to one bad picture, probably among a slew of normal snaps, as someone in this thread has already indicated.

However, this particular dude gets to add some extras to the package: entertainer, visionary, and icon to throngs of worshippers who cherish what he created for our enjoyment. Yeah, it's tough watching a dude as magnificent as him deteriorate. And, it's easy to slam him if that's what your into. WOW...
It's pretty apparent we have a bunch of celebrity suck-ups here.
If Eddie were my brother... I'd have an intervention.
He's divorced his wife... two lead singers... and a bass player.
Face it.. the man is self-centered and it's becoming apparent he has little regard for his own well-being.
This man has a SON for God's sake.. what a great role-model... He and Courtney Love should teach a class on celebrity parenting.
I know grocery stores that would have him tossed out if he was walking the aisles looking like he does.
If any of you apologists were in his driveway.. he'd have you arrested.. so, spare us with your "leave Eddie alone" juvenile B.S. He could care less about any of 'us'.. so, be true to something with more substance than a strung-out rock n' roll has-been.
The man is talented.. but call a spade a spade. He looks like shit.. doesn't respect his body/health. He wouldn't quit smoking after undergoing oral cancer surgery (brain wizard at work here).. he's still drinking, even though it's cost him most of his career and his marriage.
Now he makes Willie Nelson look like a poster boy for youthful vibrance!
Grow up people.. quit your idol-worshipping.. you're not 14 anymore!

How does smoking Marlboro cigarettes, post-op, constitute "battling cancer"?
I always thought it was funny how people who 'get clean'...or in Eddies case.. contract cancer after 40+ years of smoking... yet continue to smoke...somehow get sympathy.
If someone intentionally jumped in front of a moving train.. yet lived.. should we clap for their heroics and remarkable recovery?

Rob- when you say 'we' several times over... on who's behalf are you speaking? Speak for yourself. My opinions are my own. I don't presume to know what others think or feel.
If you have a point or opinion (no matter how stupid-really) hold it close and own up to it. You'll be alright. You don't need to pretend anyone else thinks the way you do in an attempt to justify your logic. However, If anyone DOES share your thought process... I sincerely doubt they'd admit it. At least not in a public forum.

The Bush conclusion confuses me. I was impressed with your observations (somewhat) up until that.
Not that it's any of your business.... but just to put a damper into your analytical process... I was Gary Hart's campus campaign mgr. in '88... and was actually with him at the '84 Democratic Nat'l Convention in San Francisco. So, you could say I'm not much of a Bush supporter, no.
Now.. if you care to debate me with regard to politics.. please.. let's go. However, it's fairly obvious you and I agree on Mr. Bush.

A FINAL SIGN-OFF
_________________________
Ladies and Gentlemen-
I've enjoyed my time here.
Until being directed to this site, I'd only heard about how people 'joust' via chat rooms, etc.
It's pretty clear to me now just how tightly wound some people are regarding subjects that really have little or no effect on their lives.
Are people so dejected over their own existence that they STILL, as adults, hang on to their childhood idols as a means of maintaining some form of an identity?
Folks, Eddie Van Halen is/was (debatable on the "is") a fantastic musicain. A legend in guitar and rock and roll. That part is indisputable.. and he doesn't need ME or anyone else, to confirm this.
However, pointing out the FACT (not opinion) that he has, for the better part of the last decade, declined in talent, status, and now... HEALTH.... doesn't make what he did do at one time, any less relevant. Moreover, to point out the obvious (e.g. the photo) with a little fun jabbing... isn't an act of sacrilege.
Eddie Van Halen doesn't save lives. Professional Athletes and Rock Stars don't cure disease! In fact... they're most likely one good album or one "Home Run" away from being bag-boys at a grocery store.
The best line to sum this up comes from the movie "A Bronx Tale" (I highly recommend it to those who haven't seen it).
"Tell your father to go up to Mickey Mantle the next time he can't pay the rent, and see what Mickey Mantle has to say."
Athletes, actors, musicians.... Enjoy their work.... but let's keep things in perspective, shall we?
Eddie Van Halen has abused himself to the point where he looks like a dishrag with eyes.
I hope he turns it around.. and if he were MY friend.. I'd help him. Unfortunately for Ed, people in Beverly Hills and Hollywood are too superficial and self-centered to extend a hand to a man who's a walking cry for help. And you can bet his brother isn't going to rock the boat with regard to the family "meal ticket".
God Speed, Eddie -
You've been blessed with SO much - yet so little.
Ciao!

Oh Yes, Let me see....... HArt lost and was involved in a scandal.. hmmmmmmmmmmm nice !
517 6th St. SE -- The Gary Hart House
Rumors of Gary Hart's philandering ways circulated for months leading up to his presidential candidacy in 1987. He threw down the gauntlet, challenging reporters to follow him around and claiming that there was nothing to see. Much to his chagrin, the Miami Herald took him up on it, sending reporters to stake out his Capitol Hill townhouse. Donna Rice came to visit one fateful Friday night in May and didn't leave until the following evening. This news story--along with earlier photos of Hart and Rice aggressively pursuing public displays of affection on a friend's yacht, "Monkey Business"--threw Hart's campaign into a tailspin. Three weeks into his bid for the presidency as the early front-runner, Hart pulled out of the race.
No time for a debate but thanks !

I typed what three, four, five (whatever it was) paragraphs in a matter of one or two minutes, and perhaps my fingers crossed. How wonderful of you to notice, Mireaux. Now, run along. I think your mom wants you to turn off her computer, get out of her basement and meet dad behind the tool-shed.
The more I read you people, the dumber I feel. You people have a way of writing so much.. and saying absolutely NOTHING.

One more thing...
Brownshoes wants you all to listen to him, and not think for yourselves.
Please, if you have something to offer, by all means, LET'S HEAR IT! If all you can bring to the table is to insult another's opinions and comments (much like brownshoes), well... then you only reinforce my comments that no original thinking occurs here.
If you disagree with me or anyone else.. speak up! However, if your only contribution is to tell everyone ELSE what to do... well... that pretty much speaks for itself, doesn't it 'brownie'?

Eddie Van Halen remains an icon in rock history, regardless of his personal problems. To put him down for those problems only indicates jealousy and envy. If one doesn't like the music, then don't listen. Simple!
Eddie is a fantastic guitar player, and an accomplished keyboard player as well. His musicianship is unquestionable by anyone in the know.
Touring around the world is not for the weak. It is fraught with peril: drugs, booze, crazy women, STDs, plane crashes, sleepless nights. Many have died as a result of this "glamourous" lifestyle. Many others simply burn out and fade away.
The fact that Eddie is still standing is testimony to his strength.
To point out weaknesses is the "nah nah nah" that children use. Besides, who among us hasn't had personal problems of one form or another? Money? Relationships? Drugs/booze? Sociopathy? Terminal assholery?

I applaud 'brownshoes' for his well thoughtout comment.
What I will take issue with is this:
Eddie being accomplished, an icon, etc. etc. etc. was never in question... nor should it ever BE in question. However, to give someone a 'pass' for succumbing to the pressures of 'the road' or 'success' is absurd.
Quite the contrary should be the case. One who is blessed with such talent, adoration, fame and financial reward should be criticized even MORESO than someone who has to deal with the REAL pressures of EVERY DAY life! Bills, raising children (without a nanny) making a mortgage, keeping a job, putting food on the table, etc. etc. etc.
To rise above temptation... to overcome adversity falls in the lap of EVERYONE. We should all be so lucky to have to deal with these 'pressures' while being famous, wealthy, talented and adored.
Hey, I said it in my previous post, I don't WISH Eddie Van Halen any ill-will. I was every bit a monster fan through his career. However.. it is MY line of thinking (I don't expect everyone to agree).. that we should be MORE critical of those we expect the most from.. and care the most about.
Now, it's hard for me to CARE all that much for someone I don't even know.. but we, as fans are all aware of what this man has done.. and what his potential still is.. .and to see him self-destsruct is an absolute shame. And herein lies the heart of my criticism. I, for one.. would LOVE to see this phoenix rise from his ashes and soar higher than before...
The sad (most-likely) reality is... we are witnessing yet another tragic demise.

How easy it is to judge from the sidelines! Were it possible to walk a mile in the man's shoes the pseudo-intellectual psychobabble would stop. Then again, maybe not. Some enjoy the jousting too much.
After all, Devil's advocates don't have to believe (nor even remember) what they say.
I wonder why it is some people believe that they are owed anything more from celebrities than entertainment. Isn't entertainment enough? Why must they be role models, too? This is not a realistic expectation!
Show biz is damn tough. Try it. If one is fortunate enough, talented enough, persistent enough, sacrifices enough, one MIGHT make it (I am not counting little girls with rich/pushy daddies here). Then again maybe even then they won't make it. Some do it anyway, for the love of their art.
Then again some never have the balls to try, and abandon their dreams, living resentful, angry lives. They have full time jobs they hate. These miserable souls like to criticize success without knowing what they are talking about. This is commonly known as the "sour grapes" syndrome.

Nothing can stop the aging process, at least yet. So go the gym, eat your fiber, and get your liposuction. Go home and read your celebrity magazines, flip through 500 channels of TV, and contemplate your wardrobe. To quote Tyler Durden: "Self improvement is masturbation".
Eddie, though older, STILL rocks! I'll bet he is getting a good laugh out of all this.

I just have to get up everyday and go to work, unfortunately these kids are led astray have millions of dollars and have everything thrown at them, the only ones who have a real life are the ones that make fun of stars on "where are they now" shows. I travelled for my job set up shows, if i Had millions of dollars I would be dead, instead I get up and take care of my two awesome kids.........

Eddie called in to the Stern show a few days ago and talked on the air. His story is that he had 1/3 of his tongue removed to get rid of the cancer. He says he still smokes because the cancer was not caused by smoking. He says that he spent most of his life in a studio with all the electronic equipment surrounding him releasing EMI (electro magnetic interfierence), all while he kept a metal guitar pick in his mouth. He says the metal pick in his mouth atracted the EMI, causing the cancer after decades of doing this all day everyday. I'm in the electronics industry and I believe this is truely possible. The pics simply show someone who has not taken care of his teeth's apearence, and along with the cancer on his tongue that was removed I'm sure that didn't help the cause. I think he would look the same regardless of any drug/alcohol abuse. Hope the cancer stays away, and hope to see him with do something with David Lee Roth. When he was asked about reuniting with former band mates David L, Sammy H, Michael A, he didn't have anything real nice to say about any of them, but he did say he would be open to just about anything. He said that even though he doesn't like them he is willing to work them again. He says he can play with anyone, even he doesn't like them. So I'll keep my fingers crossed on that one (but won't hold my breath). Good news is the door is not closed on that, in fact Eddie may have just opened it a bit. Side note: Eddie said his 15year old son is just as good now with the guitar as Eddie is and we will see (hear) the Van Halen legacy long after Eddie is gone. He plans on touring soon with his son and his brother (Alex). Long Live VH !

It is said that insanity and genius are next door neighbors. Van Gough cut of his ear for the love of a prostitute. Einstein had trouble tying his shoes. Abraham Lincoln suffered from depression. If Eddie has substance abuse problems maybe it's because he's one of the greatest all-around musicians (not just guitar) since Mozart. This is not intended as an excuse, just a possible explaination. What strikes me as ironic, is when David Lee Roth got busted for a dime bag of pot a few years back, Eddie ridiculed Roth about it. As if his drinking was nothing.
Hopefully he can finish rehab and do something with his musical career. Honestly, he has not done anything impressive in about 15 years.
Also, isn't appologizing for the crap you did while you were abusing drugs or drink part of most 12 step programs? It would be cool if he recognized how his actions screwed things up with Sammy, Dave, and Michael Anthony(Valerie for that matter).
Lets hope he can mend his bridges and do something good again musically AND personally.

From my personal opinion as a guitarist, albeit not a very gud one, Eddie was fucking crazy! He could do things that know one else could plus things that others had already done but usually better! I thought the site was talking about how he looked in a picture due to his health, not how he played, rocked or touched millions. Totalgym has an opinion, it maybe negative it maybe positive but who the fuck cares it's an opinion! Eddie is my idol as a musician but purely on that note! Yeah sure he's battled cancer, he's battling drugs and alcohol and has been doing so for years, but on a personal level he is just a musician who has inspired me, nothing more, millions of people go through what he has been going through! Cold i admit but it's true!
